Saving orangutans before extinction in Sumatra
2009-11-25 @ 18:02:21
Sumatra, Indonesia (CNN) -- A loud crack echoes throughout the canopy as two young orangutans come tumbling down, grasping at branches along the way to break their fall. They recover and sheepishly scamper back up.

This is lesson one of jungle school here in the forests of central Sumatra, one of the few places where orangutans are being successfully rehabilitated into the wild.

"They have to learn that their whole environment is completely different from the cage," says Peter Pratje of the Frankfurt Zoological Society. "They have to learn that branches and small trees -- the size of bars in the cage -- don't carry them any longer. They bend and break."
Ever missed the last boat and been stuck on Cheung Chau overnight? Here's the nightlife that happens only for those who stay past the last ferry

Visiting Cheung Chau island is one of our favorite ways to escape the city. In fact, it's such a great place that we stayed on the beach till nearly midnight and missed the last ferry at 11:30pm. The next ferry wouldn't be for another three hours.

Just as we were starting to get bored, we spotted clouds of steam billowing out from a hawker stall just down the street from the ferry pier. Approaching, we saw that two women were preparing fresh cheung fan and congee. Suddenly, about a dozen other hawkers appeared out of nowhere with their mobile carts of food and stoves.

Who knew that the Cheung Chau pier could be transformed into a rowdy -- albeit mini-sized -- night market within minutes? Crowds of restless locals and visitors queued up for deepfried meats on sticks, dessert soups, maki rolls, and those perfect cheung fun made to order right in front of the crowd.

The latest economic data from China suggests that industrial production grew year on year at a level faster than expected.

Retail sales also rose by more than analysts had predicted, while consumer prices continued to fall.

China's National Bureau of Statistics says the country's latest economic data shows it is well on track to meet its target of 8% growth this year.

The government's huge economic stimulus package is likely to have helped a lot.

The data indicates that activity in factories and workshops increased by 16.1% in October compared to a year ago.
Nations around world honor war dead
2009-11-11 @ 18:15:14
Nations honored those who sacrificed their lives in wars on Wednesday, in many cases for the first time without any surviving veterans of World War I.

Services took place around the world to mark the 91st anniversary of the armistice signed between Germany and the Allies on November 11, 1918.

Depending on where it is celebrated, the day is alternatively known as Armistice Day, Remembrance Day, Poppy Day or Veterans Day.
